Statement
An Ocean Without The Anchor takes inspiration from a lighthouse, a structure synonymous to a beacon of hope shining in the darkness. Functioning as a compass to guide people lost at sea, the sturdy structure gives a sense of comfort to seamen leaving and returning home. Located at the entrance of Raffles City, which was along the Singapore shoreline before land reclamation took place in 1822, the installation is a nod to the Bugis people and their rich history as seafarers.
Conveying the value of bergotong-royong which means co-operation in Malay, the tower is made up of five figures sitting upon each other's shoulders. Upon the top of the structure sits a roof of a traditional Kampung house, signifying shelter and safety as our community slowly transitions into “the new normal”.
