"CROSSING SHORES"
EAST COAST PARK, 2019
For Singapore Bicentennial Public Art Commission
Multiple faces of different ethnicities and origins are clustered together to form a single figure, emerging from the water and bound for Singaporean land. They are reminiscent of an unending quest for prosperity, viewing at the land as a source of business and prosperity, having journeyed from afar by boat across the seas. They are wrapped in a garment with patterns derived from the Malay Archipelago, the region which Singapore- or Tumasik- was part of before being a Crown Colony. Upon closer examination, their clothes are contemporary- speaking to the constant drift of migration we experience today.
